I cannot get the driver for a ATI Radeon V4800 graphic card installed. Everytime I try, I cannot reboot properly. I can enter the password, but after that nothing happens. There is just the cursor and the backgrund picture.
Don't hold me to this but I think I may have solved your problem. Please install the Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager. Then open it and in the search box type ATI RADEON. You should see about 40 results, most of which are listed specifically by the version they are made for. In your case trusty, and I see two of them and a bunch of generic drivers. Installing all of them should hurt nothing in so much as I understand it, only those which can work should have any effect on your system.
Please note that as much as I have loved ati cards in the past, the ati radeon cards have an awful reputation of instability and dying so if you have difficulties with it, don't blame the drivers. I can offer you some recommendations for better values in graphics cards, and one in particular which doesn't use a tiny fan to clog but instead a massive heat sink which you can drastically improve the efficiency of with a cheap $3 fan.

I was using my computer with two monitors for a long time, 5+ years. Two days ago I turned on my computer and both monitors began displaying the same thing, not as 1 split desktop as they had been, and the resolution was down to 1024 x 768. I can increase the resolution to 1080x1024, but not any higher and both monitors will only mirror one another. I check dxdiag and it says that my graphics device is "Microsoft Basic Display Driver." I went to check the device manager to try messing with the drivers. Here it lists the display adapter as my ATI Radeon HD 4800 (old I know). Since then I have tried everything I could think of to try to fix it and to no avail. I figure a new graphics card would probably fix the problem, but I'd rather not have to spend the money.

Except, somehow, Windows Update took it upon itself to remove the current, functioning, driver on Win10 1703 and 1709 machines, and replace it with MBDD. You have to wonder if other versions of Win10 were similarly clobbered. At any rate, this new KB 4057291 is only available for Win10 1703 and 1709.

Thermal sensors are implemented via external i2c chips or via the internal thermal sensor (rv6xx-evergreen only). To get the temperature on asics that use i2c chips, you need to load the appropriate hwmon driver for the sensor used on your board (lm63, lm64, etc.). The drm will attempt to load the appropriate hwmon driver. On boards that use the internal thermal sensor, the drm will set up the hwmon interface automatically. This is a solution to the no-console problem that might come up, when using two or more ATI cards on the same PC. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PA 3553 laptop for example has this problem. If the cursor becomes corrupted (e.g. repeating itself vertically after the monitor(s) comes out of sleep) set "SWCursor" "True" in the "OutputClass" section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf configuration file.
If you use 390X (or perhaps similar models) and the 4k output from DP, you may experiencing occasional horizontal artifacts / flickering (i.e. every half an hour or so, a horizontal strip of pixels with a height of 100 pixels across the whole screen's width shaking up and down for a few seconds). This might be a bug of the radeon driver. Changing to AMDGPU seems to fix it.

The Radeon R700 is the engineering codename for a graphics processing unit series developed by Advanced Micro Devices under the ATI brand name.
